Current vacancy for Nurse Manger
The incumbent assigned to the Office of Patient Care Service. The department description and patient/resident population served is as defined in applicable Scope of Service. Mental Health provides a wide array of services, including acute inpatient, residential, ambulatory care programs, addictions treatment, emergency/urgent care, and vocational rehabilitation services. These services are organized in a continuum from inpatient to outpatient care with the mission of providing an appropriate level of support and treatment to assist Veterans in recovery from mental health and addictive disorders and to maximize their overall level of function and satisfaction with life. Mental Health provides care that is patient-focused, culturally sensitive to promote recovery, services are provided in collaboration with other Service Lines and with the desires of Veterans and their families. The most common diagnoses encountered in Mental Health range from multitude of psychological illnesses such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression and other depressive disorders, substance abuse and addiction.

The duties minimally include:
Having direct line authority over nursing personnel who function as primary nurses for a defined group of Veterans
Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient/resident care
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age- and culture-specific components
Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient/resident transition through the continuum of care, patient/resident, and family education, patient/resident self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction
provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider
Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences
Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team
Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs
The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient/resident, whether an individual, family, group, or community
The RN is responsible for practicing in accordance with and adhering to the Nurse practice Act, VHA policies and procedures, and the standards of outside accrediting bodies
Overseeing elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct care
Ensuring the nursing process is applied, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care based on age- and cultural-specific components with documentation of care completed in a timely and accurate manner
Ensuring nursing personnel are competent and trained and consider all characteristics of the Veteran, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous life and healthcare experiences
Overseeing the technical and professional components of care delivery, including administration of medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines
Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates
Evaluating the performance of subordinates
Making recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates
Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters
Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training
Work Schedule: Regular work schedule is M-F 8-4:30.
This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital.The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds.Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia
Supervisory: Nurse Manager will have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in nursing or in a related field with a Master's Degree preferred. Board certification from a VA-approved certifying body preferred.Designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of his/her units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care that complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice.This includes the authority to accept, amend, or reject the work of subordinates.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring residents and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected residents and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on Veteran needs. The work may be more physically demanding when providing direct resident care coverage, requiring up to 12 hours of direct resident care activities. Position may require walking upto 1 hour a day standing up to 2 hours a day, frequent moderate lifting over 45 lbs. reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, both hands required, near vision correctable to 13 to 16 to jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distingiush shades of colors.
