The incumbent Social Worker (MSW) is assigned to the residential Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Program within Mental Health Services and will be responsible for the management, coordination and development of social work services to veterans and their families assigned to the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Program as well as in areas that include, but are not limited to the psychiatric outpatient clinics.
Incumbent provides therapy/counseling (individual, couples, families, and groups) to veterans for issues related to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other complex and diverse psychosocial problems. MSW maintains a designated clinical caseload.
Duties include the following independently performed tasks: interviewing veterans; completing psychosocial assessments; developing comprehensive treatment plans; establishing and maintaining therapeutic alliances; developing and providing clinically efficacious therapeutic interventions; analyzing complex psychological problems; identifying specific veteran needs; coordinating with external consultants and ancillary mental health professionals to insure appropriate and necessary treatment is provided/offered to veterans; developing and providing psycho-educational groups; educating and training other professionals and students in effective PTSD treatment; regularly attending and actively participating in required PCT, medical center, and mental health meetings; and making sound professional judgments regarding clinical impressions, treatment approaches, and treatment planning.Typical problems that may be encountered include: PTSD, depression, anxiety, impulse control issues, suicidal/homicidal ideation, and clinical and sub-clinical problems affecting vocational and social adjustment.Incumbent maintains accurate, timely, and complete clinical records in accordance with PCT guidelines, professional practice, and VA administration guidelines.He/she establishes and maintains effective relationships with various Veteran agencies and develops personalized services for veterans.Incumbent exercises mature professional judgment and flexible use of a wide range of clinical skills, while actively participating in program planning and the identification of program needs.Efficiently completes clinical data with accompanying research forms and computer processed in accordance with NEPEC guidelines.
Basic Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship
Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
Licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
Loss of Licensure or Certification. Once licensed or certified, social workers must maintain a full, valid and unrestricted independent license or certification to remain qualified for employment. Loss of licensure or certification will result in removal from the GS-185 social work series and may result in termination of employment.
Physical Requirements. Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019, a pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates for appointments in the VA. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. All of the above reports must be completed within 90 days of appointment.
English Language Proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A. Paragraph 3J, this part.
Grade Determinations:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-11 LEVEL: Requires a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree professional social work experience in the field of health care. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.
SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 LEVEL: To meet the required specialized experience for the GS-11 level, applicant may substitute a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work. You must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position involve primarily walking, talking, driving, use of the telephone, etc. Strenuous physical activity is not required although the incumbent is expected to withstand pressure and stress as part of their day-to-day activities. The incumbent observes normal safety precautions while working primarily in an office type environment The environment also includes home visits, visits to community agencies, visits to care giving facilities n the community etc., depending on the incumbent's specific assignment Most of the time the incumbent operates in an environment that is well lighted, clean, and does not pose a hazard to personal safety. There is ongoing expossure to individuals having psychiatric and physical illness and disabilities. These include acute infections, violent or aggressive behavior, and chronic psychiatric and medical problems.
